Setting up an HP printer

The fastest HP setup path is through the HP Smart app — it handles driver installation, Wi-Fi pairing, and test printing in one guided flow. Manual setup via Windows or macOS works but takes more steps.

Recommended: HP Smart app setup (Windows & Mac)
  • Download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store (Windows) or App Store / Google Play (mobile)
  • Open HP Smart → click Set Up a New Printer
  • Follow the on-screen prompts — the app will find the printer and walk through Wi-Fi pairing automatically
  • When prompted, press and hold the Wireless button on the printer until the light flashes
  • Complete the setup and print the test page from within HP Smart to confirm
Manual Wi-Fi setup without the app
  • On the printer's control panel, navigate to Settings → Wireless Setup Wizard (or Network Setup)
  • Select your Wi-Fi network name from the list
  • Enter the Wi-Fi password using the printer's keypad or touchscreen
  • Once connected, print a Wireless Network Test Report to confirm the connection
  • On your computer, go to Printers & Scanners → Add a printer — the HP printer should appear
💡
HP Instant Ink subscribers: If your HP printer suddenly stops printing and shows an error about "credentials" or "service," your Instant Ink subscription may have lapsed or the payment failed. Log in at instantink.hpconnected.com to check your account status. A paused Instant Ink subscription can disable printing entirely on some HP models.

Common HP printer problems

Select the issue you're seeing — each tab has HP-specific steps that go beyond generic advice.

HP offline — quick answer
HP printers show as offline most often because their IP address changed after a router restart. The permanent fix is to assign a static IP through the HP printer's embedded web server (EWS) or through your router's DHCP reservation table. The temporary fix is to remove and re-add the printer.
Access the HP embedded web server (EWS)
  • Print a network configuration page from the HP printer's control panel — find it under Settings → Reports → Network Configuration Page
  • Note the IP address on the printout
  • Type that IP address into your browser's address bar — the HP EWS opens
  • Go to Network → Wired (802.3) or Wireless → find the IPv4 configuration
  • Change from Automatic (DHCP) to Manual and enter a static IP outside your router's DHCP range
  • Save — the printer will now keep this IP permanently
💡
HP-specific: Many HP printers have a "Restore Network Settings" button that resets them to DHCP. Don't press this after assigning a static IP or you'll need to repeat the process.

HP blank pages — quick answer
HP inkjet printers print blank pages most often because of dried or clogged printheads — especially after sitting unused. HP printers have a built-in printhead cleaning utility accessible from the control panel. Run it once, then print the nozzle check pattern to see which channels are restored.
HP printhead cleaning — control panel method
  • On the HP printer's control panel, go to Settings → Printer Maintenance → Clean Printhead (wording varies by model)
  • Select Clean — the printer runs a cleaning cycle (uses a small amount of ink)
  • When finished, print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page from the same menu
  • If lines are still missing, run one more cleaning cycle — maximum two consecutive cycles
  • If three cycles don't restore a channel, the cartridge or printhead may need replacement
HP-specific blank page causes
  • New HP cartridge with protective tape not fully removed from the copper contact strip
  • HP Instant Ink cartridge not recognized — the subscription may have lapsed
  • HP printers with integrated printheads: dried ink after extended non-use (more common in inkjets than laser)
  • HP LaserJet printing blank: toner cartridge protection strip not removed after installation
→ Full blank pages guide
HP driver issues — quick answer
Windows Update frequently replaces HP's full-featured driver with a generic Microsoft IPP driver. This causes loss of HP-specific features and sometimes breaks printing entirely. The fix is to download HP's full driver package from the HP support site using your exact model number — not through Windows Update.
Download the correct HP driver
  • Find your exact HP model number — it's printed on a label on the printer itself (usually on the front, bottom, or inside the cartridge door)
  • Go to support.hp.com/us-en/drivers
  • Enter the model number — select your operating system
  • Download the Full Feature Software and Driver — not the Basic Driver
  • Remove the existing printer from Printers & Scanners and from Device Manager before installing
  • Run the HP installer as Administrator and follow all steps including the test print at the end
💡
HP driver types: HP offers three driver options — Full Feature (recommended, includes HP Smart and maintenance tools), Basic Driver (just printing), and Universal Print Driver (for IT environments). For home use, always download Full Feature.
HP Wi-Fi issues — quick answer
HP printers use HP's wireless direct or standard Wi-Fi. If the printer drops from the network, it's almost always an IP address change (DHCP) or the printer joined a different network. The HP Wireless Network Test Report — printed from the printer's control panel — tells you exactly what's wrong with the connection.
Print an HP Wireless Network Test Report
  • On the HP control panel, go to Settings → Wireless → Wireless Network Test Report
  • The printer prints a diagnostic page showing network status, signal strength, and connection issues
  • Read the Diagnostics Results section — it lists specific failures and recommended actions
  • Common failures: "Router did not respond" (IP conflict), "Cannot find network name" (wrong SSID), "WEP/WPA password incorrect"
HP Wireless Direct (print without a router)
  • On the HP printer, enable Wireless Direct from Settings → Wireless → Wireless Direct
  • The printer creates its own Wi-Fi hotspot — connect your device to it directly
  • Useful for travel, troubleshooting, or printing when the main Wi-Fi is down
→ Full network printer guide
HP ink issues — quick answer
HP ink cartridge issues often involve the chip on the cartridge not being recognized, third-party cartridges being blocked by firmware, or Instant Ink cartridges being disabled when the subscription lapses. HP printers are the most restrictive about non-OEM ink — official cartridges are the safest choice.
HP cartridge not recognized
  • Remove the cartridge and clean the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water
  • Check that no protective tape remains on the contacts or the ink nozzle area
  • Reinsert firmly until it clicks — HP cartridges have a positive click when seated correctly
  • If still not recognized: the cartridge may be damaged or counterfeit — try a genuine HP cartridge
⚠️
HP firmware and third-party ink: HP periodically releases firmware updates that disable non-HP cartridges. If your printer stopped recognizing a third-party cartridge after a firmware update, you can sometimes roll back the firmware — check HP's support page for your model. HP is required to disclose this in some regions.
HP test page — quick answer
HP printers can print a test page directly from the control panel — no computer needed. This is the most reliable way to confirm the hardware is working independently of drivers or software.
Print a built-in HP test page
  • Most HP inkjets: Hold the Power button, then press Cancel/Resume once, then release Power
  • HP LaserJet: Control panel → Reports → Configuration Page or Print Quality Report
  • HP with touchscreen: Settings → Reports → Printer Status Report
  • Alternatively: use FixMyPrinter.org test pages — click Print Test Page and select your HP printer

Canon PRINT app
iOS & Android — handles setup and wireless printing

Setting up a Canon printer

Canon's easiest setup path uses the Canon PRINT app — it handles Wi-Fi pairing for PIXMA printers automatically. For ImageCLASS laser models, manual setup or the driver installer is typically required.

Canon PIXMA Wi-Fi setup via Canon PRINT app
  • Download Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY from the App Store or Google Play
  • Open the app → tap Register Printer
  • Follow the Wi-Fi setup wizard — it will prompt you to press the printer's wireless button
  • Once connected, the printer appears in the app — print a test page to confirm
  • On your computer, go to Printers & Scanners — the Canon printer should now appear automatically via Bonjour/mDNS
Canon PIXMA manual nozzle check and cleaning
  • On the Canon printer's control panel, press Menu → Setup → Maintenance → Nozzle Check
  • Press OK — the nozzle check pattern prints showing each color channel
  • If any color shows gaps, select Cleaning from the Maintenance menu
  • Run one cleaning cycle, then print the nozzle check again to compare
  • If three cleaning cycles don't restore a channel, check cartridge levels and consider replacement
Canon-specific issues to know
  • Canon PIXMA printers will refuse to print if even one cartridge is empty — the printer stops all printing, not just the color that's empty
  • Canon ink cartridges have chips that track usage — refilling without resetting the chip causes "cartridge empty" errors even with full ink
  • Canon ImageCLASS laser printers require the drum unit to be installed separately from the toner — a missing drum causes blank pages
  • Canon printers on dual-band routers sometimes connect to 5GHz and then drop — force them to 2.4GHz in the router settings

Canon PIXMA common fixes

Canon blank pages — quick answer
Canon inkjet blank pages are almost always clogged nozzles or a cartridge seated incorrectly. Canon printers are more prone to nozzle clogging than most brands because the printhead is built into the printer body (not the cartridge) and dries out faster during long periods of non-use.
Canon deep cleaning vs standard cleaning
  • Try Standard Cleaning first (Maintenance → Cleaning) — uses less ink
  • If standard cleaning doesn't restore output, use Deep Cleaning (Maintenance → Deep Cleaning) — uses more ink but is more effective on stubborn clogs
  • Run at most two deep cleaning cycles before allowing the printer to rest for 24 hours
  • After resting, try one more standard cleaning — the rest period allows dried ink to soften
Canon offline — quick answer
Canon printers go offline for the same reasons as all network printers — IP address change after a router restart. Canon's embedded web server (accessible by typing the printer's IP in a browser) lets you assign a static IP to prevent this.
  • On the Canon printer's control panel, print a network configuration page to find the current IP
  • Type the IP into a browser — the Canon EWS interface opens
  • Go to LAN Settings → Wi-Fi → TCP/IP Settings → switch from Auto to Manual
  • Enter a static IP address outside your router's DHCP range
  • Save, restart the printer, then re-add it on your computer using the new static IP
Canon error codes — what they mean
Canon PIXMA printers display error codes as a combination of an alarm lamp pattern (flashes) or an alphanumeric code on the display. The most common codes are listed below.
Error CodeMeaningFix
E02 / 1000No paper loadedLoad paper and press OK
E03 / 1300Paper jamRemove jammed paper carefully, then press OK
E08 / 1700Ink absorber nearly fullContact Canon support — absorber needs replacement
E13 / 1686Ink cartridge may be emptyReplace the indicated cartridge
E16 / 1688Ink cartridge is emptyReplace empty cartridge to continue
5100Carriage errorCheck for paper stuck in carriage path, power cycle
Canon test page methods
Canon printers can print a nozzle check pattern from the control panel — this is more useful than a generic test page because it shows exactly which ink channels are working.
  • PIXMA with display: Menu → Setup → Maintenance → Nozzle Check → OK
  • PIXMA without display: Hold the Stop/Reset button until the alarm lamp flashes twice, then release
  • ImageCLASS laser: Hold the Stop button until two flashes, then release
  • Alternatively use FixMyPrinter.org test pages — print from your browser

iOS & Android — setup, nozzle check, ink levels

Setting up an Epson printer

Epson's Epson Smart Panel app is the fastest setup path. For EcoTank models, the initial ink fill process is unique — it must be completed correctly to avoid air bubbles that cause blank page printing.

Epson EcoTank initial ink fill — critical steps
  • Position the printer on a flat, stable surface before filling ink tanks
  • Open the ink tank covers and fill each tank with the correct color ink bottle — don't mix colors
  • Fill each tank to the upper fill line — don't overfill
  • Close the tank caps firmly — a loose cap causes air leaks and blank printing
  • Power on the printer and let it charge the ink system completely — this takes 10–20 minutes and the printer must not be moved or turned off during this process
  • After the charge completes, print a nozzle check pattern to confirm all channels are primed
Epson-specific issues to know
  • EcoTank printers require 2–3 cleaning cycles on first setup or after running completely dry — this is normal, not a defect
  • Epson printers have a maintenance box that fills with waste ink — when full, the printer stops printing entirely (error code E-12 or similar). The maintenance box must be replaced
  • Epson Expression and WorkForce printers running on third-party ink sometimes show false "ink out" errors — genuine Epson ink avoids this
  • Epson Connect (cloud printing) requires an active Epson account — if the account lapses, wireless cloud printing stops

Epson common fixes

Epson blank / nozzle — quick answer
Epson inkjets print blank pages almost exclusively because of clogged nozzles. Epson's cleaning cycles are effective but use significant ink — especially on EcoTank models. Run cleaning cycles strategically: one at a time, with the nozzle check between each cycle.
  • Open Epson Smart Panel or go to the printer's control panel → Maintenance → Print Head Nozzle Check
  • Review the printout — any missing lines indicate blocked nozzles for that color
  • Select Print Head Cleaning from the Maintenance menu
  • After one cleaning, print the nozzle check again — allow 5 minutes between cycles
  • If after two cycles the channel is still blocked, select Power Cleaning (available on many EcoTank models) — this uses more ink but is more aggressive
  • Allow the printer to rest for several hours after Power Cleaning before testing again
Epson offline — quick answer
Epson printers go offline due to IP address changes like all network printers. Epson's embedded web server lets you assign a static IP. For Epson Connect (cloud printing) issues, the fix is different — check your Epson account status.
  • Print a network status sheet from the Epson printer's control panel (Setup → Network Status)
  • Type the IP address into a browser to access the Epson EWS
  • Go to Network → Basic → set IP address mode to Manual
  • Enter a static IP outside your router's DHCP range and save
  • For Epson Connect cloud issues, visit Epson Connect and verify your account is active
Epson drivers — quick answer
Always download Epson drivers from the Epson support site — not through Windows Update. Epson's full driver includes the Status Monitor (ink levels) and the Maintenance tools (nozzle check, cleaning), which the generic driver omits.
  • Go to epson.com/Support/Printers and search for your model
  • Download the Printer Driver and Epson Scan 2 package (not just the basic driver)
  • Remove the printer from Printers & Scanners and Device Manager before installing
  • Run the Epson installer as Administrator and complete all steps
Epson test page methods
  • Most EcoTank models: Hold the Power button for 5 seconds to print a nozzle check
  • Expression Photo: Hold both Black and Color buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds
  • WorkForce models: Press and hold the Cancel button
  • Via Epson Smart Panel: Open the app → Printer Maintenance → Nozzle Check
  • Or use FixMyPrinter.org test pages to print from your browser

Drum vs Toner
Key distinction: Brother laser printers have a separate drum unit — both drum and toner need replacing separately

Setting up a Brother printer

Brother's iPrint&Scan app handles Wi-Fi setup for most models. For laser models, understanding the drum/toner separation is essential — both components must be installed correctly.

Brother drum vs toner — the critical distinction
⚠️
Brother laser printers have two components: the toner cartridge (contains the toner powder) and the drum unit (the photosensitive drum that transfers toner to paper). Both are separate and both need to be replaced separately. A new toner in a worn drum still produces poor output. If you're getting faded prints, drum lines, or ghosting — check whether the drum, not just the toner, needs replacement.
Brother Wi-Fi setup
  • On the Brother printer's control panel, go to Menu → Network → WLAN → Setup Wizard
  • Select your Wi-Fi network name from the list
  • Enter the Wi-Fi password using the keypad
  • The printer confirms connection — print a network configuration report to verify
  • Alternatively, use WPS: press the WPS button on your router within 2 minutes of pressing WPS on the printer
Brother-specific issues to know
  • Brother laser printers display "Replace Drum" messages based on a page count — the drum may still work. Reset the drum counter after cleaning or if the drum is still good: hold Go for 4 seconds after installing
  • Brother MFC all-in-ones sometimes lose print capability after a scan error — power cycle the printer completely to reset the scan/print engine
  • Brother printers with the "Unable to Clean" error have a clogged printhead that cleaning cycles haven't resolved — Brother's support page has a manual cleaning procedure for each model
  • Brother printers can be locked to toner cartridges by region — if you bought a printer in one country and are using it in another, toner incompatibility may occur

Brother common fixes

Brother drum & toner — quick answer
Brother laser printers are the most common source of drum-related confusion. Toner cartridges and drum units are two separate components — most brands integrate them, but Brother keeps them separate. The drum typically lasts 3–4x longer than the toner cartridge.
Drum life and replacement
  • When the printer displays "Drum End Soon" or "Replace Drum," the drum page counter is reaching its rated life
  • If print quality is still acceptable, you can continue printing — the counter is advisory, not a hard stop on most models
  • To reset the drum counter after replacing the drum: open the front cover → press and hold Go for 4 seconds until the LED flashes
  • A new toner with an old drum will print correctly but the drum will still show wear artifacts (faint lines, ghosting, spots)
Diagnosing drum vs toner issues
  • Faded print even with new toner → drum is worn, needs replacement
  • Repetitive marks at regular intervals down the page → drum has a physical defect (scratch or toner buildup)
  • Ghosting (faint echo of previous print) → drum isn't fully discharging between prints — worn drum
  • Black vertical streak → drum scratch or damaged corona wire inside drum unit
  • Horizontal white bands → toner cartridge running low or toner not distributed evenly (shake the cartridge gently)
Brother offline — quick answer
Brother printers go offline due to IP address changes. Brother's embedded web server provides an easy way to assign a static IP. For MFC models, also check whether the scanner is locked up — a scanner error can sometimes cause the printer to appear offline.
  • Print a network configuration report: on the printer, press Menu → Print Reports → Network Configuration
  • Note the IP address and type it into a browser to access the Brother EWS
  • Go to Network → Wired or WLAN → TCP/IP → set Boot Method to Static
  • Enter a static IP address and save — the printer restarts with the fixed IP
Brother drivers — quick answer
Always download Brother drivers from the official Brother support site. Brother offers both a full driver package and individual drivers — download the full package which includes the Status Monitor and iPrint&Scan integration.
  • Go to Brother Support and find your model
  • Download the Full Driver & Software Package for your OS
  • Remove the printer from Printers & Scanners and Device Manager before installing
  • Run the Brother installer as Administrator and follow all steps including network detection
  • After installation, print a test page from the Brother driver's Printer Properties
Brother test page methods
  • Brother inkjet: Menu → Ink → Test Print → Print Quality → OK
  • Brother laser (HL series): Press Go while the printer is Ready — prints a test page
  • Brother MFC laser: Menu → Print Reports → Test Print → OK
  • Brother with touchscreen: Settings → All Settings → Ink/Maintenance → Print Quality
