Quick Checks
- Find your exact model number โ it's printed on the front panel or on a label near the cartridge access door (e.g., HP DeskJet 4155e, HP LaserJet Pro M283fdw)
- Always download drivers from support.hp.com โ third-party driver sites bundle unnecessary software and may include malware
- If your HP printer stopped working after a Windows update, reinstalling the driver from HP's site usually fixes it
- For newer HP printers (2018 and later), the HP Smart app replaces the traditional driver installer on both Windows and macOS
- Chromebooks do not need a separate driver โ HP printers work through the built-in Chrome printing system
HP Printer Model Lines and Their Drivers
HP organizes its printers into distinct product families. Each family uses different driver packages, so identifying which line your printer belongs to is the first step.
HP DeskJet and DeskJet Plus are HP's entry-level home printers. Popular models include the DeskJet 2755e, DeskJet 4155e, and DeskJet Plus 4155. These use the HP Smart app as the primary driver on Windows 10/11 and macOS. The traditional full-feature driver is available as an alternative for users who prefer it.
HP Envy and Envy Inspire target home users who print photos frequently. The Envy 6455e and Envy Inspire 7955e are among the most common models. These also use the HP Smart app, but the full-feature driver unlocks advanced photo-printing settings like borderless mode and color profiles.
HP OfficeJet and OfficeJet Pro are designed for home offices and small teams. The OfficeJet Pro 9015e, OfficeJet Pro 9025e, and OfficeJet Pro 9125e are popular choices. These printers ship with more complex drivers that support ADF scanning, automatic duplex printing, and fax functionality.
HP LaserJet and LaserJet Pro handle high-volume black-and-white and color printing. The LaserJet Pro M283fdw, LaserJet Pro M209dw, and Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4301fdw are current bestsellers. LaserJet drivers include PCL6 and PostScript options โ PCL6 is the default for most users, while PostScript is preferred for graphic design and publishing applications.
HP Smart Tank uses refillable ink tanks instead of cartridges. The Smart Tank 651 and Smart Tank 7602 are popular models. These use the HP Smart app and full-feature drivers.

Method 2: HP Support Site (Full-Feature Driver Package)
For older printers or when you need the full-feature driver instead of HP Smart:
The full-feature driver package is typically 150โ400 MB and includes the print driver, scan driver, HP Printer Assistant, and any available firmware updates.
Method 3: Windows Update (Basic Driver)
Windows Update includes basic HP drivers for most models:
The Windows Update driver handles basic printing but may not support scanning, ink level monitoring, or advanced print settings. For full functionality, use the HP Smart app or the full-feature driver from HP's site.
Method 4: macOS Automatic Installation
macOS includes built-in drivers for most HP printers:
If macOS doesn't find the driver automatically, download HP Easy Start from support.hp.com, which guides you through the correct driver installation for macOS.
HP Universal Print Driver
The HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) is a single driver that works with most HP LaserJet and select OfficeJet Pro printers. It's designed for IT administrators managing multiple HP printers across a network.
The UPD supports PCL6, PCL5, and PostScript emulation modes. Download it from support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-universal-print-driver-series-for-windows.
The UPD is useful when you're connecting to a shared HP printer on a company network and don't know the exact model. It's not recommended for home users โ the model-specific driver or HP Smart app provides better functionality.
Fix HP Printer Driver Issues
Driver Won't Install
If the HP driver installer hangs or fails, try these steps in order:
If the installer still fails, download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor โ it's a free diagnostic tool that detects and fixes common HP driver and connectivity issues.
Printer Works on USB but Not on Wi-Fi
This is a driver configuration issue, not a hardware problem:
"Driver Is Unavailable" Error
This error appears when Windows detects the printer but can't load the driver:
Printer Stopped Working After Windows Update
Windows feature updates occasionally break HP printer drivers. To fix:
HP Printer Firmware Updates
Firmware is separate from the driver. The driver runs on your computer; firmware runs on the printer itself. HP releases firmware updates to fix bugs, improve print quality, and patch security vulnerabilities.
Update firmware through the HP Smart app (it notifies you when updates are available), through the printer's control panel (Settings โ Printer Maintenance โ Update the Printer), or by downloading firmware directly from HP's support site.
Never turn off the printer during a firmware update โ interrupting the process can make the printer unusable.

The HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) works with most HP LaserJet and select OfficeJet Pro printers through a single install. It supports PCL6, PCL5, and PostScript, and is designed for IT administrators managing multiple HP printers.
